Rangers to hold talks with Ianis Hagi agent to alter contract terms for return to 1st-team action

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers not holding talks with Ianis Hagi's agent in order to alter the terms of his contract so he can play is "strange", according to Derek Ferguson.

The attacker has a clause in his contract that would trigger a wage increase of £6,000 if he players more games [Daily Record, 13 August], so he is turning out for the B Team while stuck on 99 senior games.

Philippe Clement has indicated he has no plans for the Romanian and he can leave, but with no exit yet forthcoming and Hagi wanting to stay [Football Scotland, 19 August] Ferguson wants those involved to sit down and agree a way for Hagi to contribute.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: "I just don't understand why they can't get round the table with Hagi's advisers or his agent, whoever it is that deals with it, with the manager, and sort something out.

"Whether it's a delay in the payments, or whether they can cut back on it a little bit. It just seems strange to me."

Philippe Clement has told Ianis Hagi he can leave Rangers

Hagi has been told he can leave by Philippe Clement [Sky Sports, 12 August] despite being keen to continue with the club, but the Belgian has struggled to get new signings through the door.

Why the club handed the former Alaves loanee a new contract in December 2022 with such a clause in it makes little sense if they are now trying so hard to avoid it.

Unless a transfer away is on the cards imminently there seems to be no benefit to club or player for him to continue shining in the B Team only.

Rapid Bucharest were thought to be looking to sign him [Fanatik, 20 August] but the deadline is now just days away and he has not gone, so internal talks may be the only way out of the situation.
