Rangers are set to appoint St Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie as their new chief executive, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via their website on Saturday (17 August) that John Bennett has eyed up the "award-winning CEO" after the "shock" exit of James Bisgrove earlier this year.

It is understood that Gillespie is a lifelong Rangers fan who has contacts inside Ibrox.

The Sun adds that the deal will be announced soon as the fine details on his contract still need to be finalised.

Rangers set to hire Jim Gillespie as new CEO to help John Bennett

Rangers have been an absolute mess over the last 12 months.

They gave Michael Beale as much money as they could to sign a bunch of duds and then sacked him not long after the transfer window closed. They hired Philippe Clement to replace him but then couldn't back him to get in the players he wanted. The team isn't even playing at Ibrox at the moment and Bennett was left high and dry by Bisgove when he moved to the Middle East earlier this year.

In fairness to Bennett, it seems like he was a bit blind-sided by Bisgrove's move and that hasn't exactly helped matters for the Light Blues chairman.

It has to stop and hopefully Gillespie becomes a great appointment at Ibrox.

He definitely has all the credentials.
