Jose Cifuentes news adds to Rangers mess as major transfer wheeling and dealing to come

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Jose Cifuentes is one of a group of players signed by Michael Beale who likely don't want to be at Rangers any more ahead of his potential return to Ibrox, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Daily Record reported on 9 July that the Ecuadorian could end up back at Ibrox in December after making just a single start on loan at Cruzeiro where he was substituted at half time, before failing to get off the bench for his country at the Copa America this summer.

His departure to Brazil was supposed to end up being made permanent after his new manager indicated he was "sure" the buy option would be triggered [Daily Record, 10 February].

But if he ends up back in Glasgow before the end of the year Ferguson feels he will only create the same problem as is currently being felt with exit-linked forwards Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers as the Light Blues strain to offload unwanted players.

He said, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News: "He's like a few others like Lammers and Dessers. I think he's already said he finds it difficult in terms of the weather and the culture here. It doesn't suit him whatsoever, so we thought when he went away on loan that that would be the end of that.

"I think he was brought in for about £1million. Again, you've got a barrel-load of these players at the club at the moment that we're trying to offload.

"It's going to be extremely difficult so there's going to be a hell of a lot of wheeling and dealing over the course of the next few weeks.

"He comes into the category of another player that we were told was going to be a sensational player, that was by a certain Mr Beale, and he's found it really difficult.

"So it's a bit of a mess at the moment. You're usually really excited about the new season but I don't feel that. I think the fans are a wee bit downbeat at the moment.

"There you go, there's three players that probably don't want to be Rangers players, the fans would like them to leave the club, it's a mess."

Michael Beale's Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers set for Rangers exit

Rangers
Sam Lammers was signed by Michael Beale but struggled badly at Rangers.

Dessers at least showed improvements through last season as he ended up totalling 22 goals, while Lammers rebounded from a miserable time in Glasgow to score 11 on loan at FC Utrecht.

The Nigerian has interest from various sources [Rangers Review, 3 July] but a deal has not yet materialised, while the Dutchman is only now close to a move to FC Twente [Andrea Losapio, 24 July] after he was dumped in the B Team and other exits to the Eredivisie fell through.

If Cifuentes' fortunes in South America don't improve it is hard to see where much transfer interest is going to be generated upon a return to Ibrox so he could provide Philippe Clement with a new headache come the winter.
