Birmingham City likely do hold a degree of interest in Connor Goldson but that won't necessarily see them make a "blockbusting" move for the Rangers man, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The outlet reported on its website on Monday (8 July) that the Blues would have to take into consideration the potential transfer fees and wages needed to bring the 31-year-old to League One this summer.

On top of that, there is an expectation a bidding war could emerge following the defender's previous links with Al-Ettifaq [Daily Record, 24 April] and competing with those sorts of sides is unlikely to appeal to Birmingham.

Previous reports from north of the border had suggested the Blues were ready to spend big money to try and tempt the Englishman south this summer after a difficult campaign under Philippe Clement at Ibrox [Football Scotland, 7 July].

Will Rangers sell Connor Goldson to Birmingham City in the summer transfer window?

While a lot of Rangers supporters would have been eager to see the back of Goldson this summer, it was always going to be difficult to get him off of the books due to the length and size of the contract he currently has in Glasgow.

Even though Birmingham have plenty of money to throw around this summer following their takeover, they are unlikely to spurge that on a player who is on the wrong side of 30 as they look to return back to the Championship.

Perhaps that could change later in the window, but at this moment in time it does seem unlikely the Blues will front up the cash required to get this over the line. However, in the transfer window, things can change very quickly.

If the Light Blues are desperate to sell the Englishman later in the summer maybe their asking price or valuation could drop and entice Birmingham into a deal. If not, this may be a link that doesn't quite go anywhere.

It will be interesting to see how Clement utilises the centre-back next term if he isn't able to move him on.
