James Tavernier transfer exit perfect timing at Rangers after Celtic psychological toll

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

James Tavernier leaving Rangers this summer would be "perfect" timing as the squad needs to be overhauled in the wake of Celtic's dominance, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Ibrox captain has long been linked to a move to rejoin former manager Steven Gerrard in the Saudi Pro League, with the title-winning manager again said to be lining up a deal this summer [Daily Record, 24 May], while successor Giovanni van Bronckhorst reportedly also wants him in Turkey at Besiktas [Sozcu, 9 June].

One report has emerged suggesting that the defender has already agreed terms with Al-Ettifaq [The Gallant Few, 19 June], and Ferguson feels it would be indeed a suitable point for him to move on as Philippe Clement overhauls the playing staff during the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: "A move to Turkey might suit him or else go down to Saudi, maybe a slower pace, more time on the ball, it might suit him, and obviously the money.

"I just think with Tavernier, yeah he's our captain, but it's time for change with quite a few of them because it's been proven over the last number of years that the dominant team in the city are Celtic.

"Sometimes it starts to get in your head with some players so I think it would be the perfect time for Tav to leave to be honest with you."

Will James Tavernier reunite with former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard?

Rangers
James Tavernier has been repeatedly linked with a move to join Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia.

The Light Blues have been linked to possible replacement signings, suggesting that there is an eye on replacing their record-breaking captain, who became the highest scoring British defender in history last season [BBC Sport, 31 March].

But Dujon Sterling is reported to be the man to slot in if the skipper does leave after a strong debut campaign at Rangers, [Rangers Review, 17 June].

Speculation over Tavernier's future will now likely continue for however long his Gers career lasts, at the age of 32 and with another manager revamping a squad that has fallen short, but if this summer does see him leave he will leave big shoes to fill.
