Rangers 'passenger' faces transfer exit amid 'real issue' at Ibrox as pundit ready to drive him down there

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson claims he would be prepared to drive Kieran Dowell down to England himself to complete a transfer away from Rangers.

According to Rangers Review's Chris Jack (28 May) the former Norwich midfielder could make a return south of the border this summer, having managed just 17 total appearances in an injury-ravaged season in Glasgow.

It is that lack of availability that leads the fomer Ibrox midfielder to feel that the Light Blues need to move him on when the club has suffered heavily with players being out for long periods in recent seasons.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: "I'll drive him down. Again, it's like quite a number of them, he's a good football player but he just cannae stay fit.

"We cannae be carrying passengers any more. I think that's been a real issue, a real problem.

"He's a midfield player, you've got to be able to churn out at least 25-30 games a season and he's not been able to do that."

Kieran Dowell one of many Rangers transfers to fail on injuries

Danilo is another Rangers signing who missed most of the season due to injury.

Clearly it is not what any player wants and each one individually deserves sympathy, but Rangers repeatedly being unable to turn to large portions of their squad has almost certainly contributed to a lack of trophy success in recent years.

Quality players such as Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe have left this summer on free transfers because their lack of availability means the club cannot justify the investment, while the likes of Dowell, Danilo, Tom Lawrence, Ridvan Yilmaz and John Souttar have been brought in over the past two summers and missed huge swathes of time out injured, often at the most inopportune times.

Some will stay on the basis of what they have shown when fit, but there will likely need to be some sacrifices made as Philippe Clement looks to bring in new signings, and if there is any interest in Dowell, 26, it wouldn't be a shock if the club welcomed it.
