Barry Ferguson believes that Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron is available for Rangers to sign this summer for a compensation fee.

The 21-year-old's contract at Pittodrie runs out next month and he will be available on a free transfer.

However, there is expected to be compensation involved and Ferguson has urged his club to secure his services.

He told the Daily Record on 31 May: "Connor Barron is another. When I have watched him play for Aberdeen or Scotland U21s I’ve liked what I’ve seen. He would be available this summer on a compensation fee. What a snip.

"I believe another central midfielder is a must this summer. Someone who is going to plant his backside right in the central area and anchor the midfield.

"In modern day language, it’s a number six. Someone to protect the backline and start moves. Get that and I think we could see the best of Nico Raskin beside Diomande - the pair of them really got in Celtic’s faces in Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final."

Rangers must consider Connor Barren transfer this summer

Barron's potential acquisition by Gers this summer could be a strategic move for the club.

As his contract with Aberdeen is set to expire, Rangers would only need to pay a compensation fee, making him a cost-effective option.

This aligns with the club's need to strengthen the squad without overspending, especially in the current financial climate.

Moreover, Barron's age and potential for growth make him a valuable long-term investment.

At just 21, he has already shown promise in his performances for Aberdeen and the Scotland Under-21s.

His addition to the squad could provide depth in the midfield, potentially allowing for rotation and competition for starting spots especially with John Lundstram expected to leave and Ryan Jack potentially following him out of the door.

This could also push other players to improve their performance, ultimately strengthening the team and that's something Philippe Clement would welcome.
