Rangers begin internal transfer talks at Ibrox with double exit deal now close
Rangers will “definitely” be having conversations about John Lundstram and Borna Barisic leaving Ibrox this summer and what that means for their summer budget, according to Dan Plumley.
The senior duo have both reportedly signed contracts to join Turkish side Trabzonspor at the end of the season when their current Ibrox deals expire, although Philippe Clement has denied anything official has been signed.
But the boss did admit that talks for a new deal with both players have been postponed until the end of the season as a result of the speculation surrounding them.
When asked if the club could factor their potential exits into their summer transfer budget already despite no confirmation, football finance expert Plumley admitted that conversations will be taking place.
“I think the reality again is yes they will,” he said exclusively to Ibrox News.
“Obviously, they’ll know internally, as you say, more than we will from the outside looking in.
“That’s not to say that it is absolutely nailed on. Transfers, as we know, fall through or don’t happen for various reasons, but, if you’ve got players who are looking to move on in the summer and now is the time when those conversations will be taking place, then if you budget for a scenario then you’ll know that X amount of players are off the wage bill, or X amount of fees you can generate for those players, then that will dictate what you can go and spend in the market.
“It’s one of those where as I say internally they’ll know a lot more than we do from the outside looking in but those conversations are definitely taking place now and have probably been taking place for a few weeks to get ahead of the game.
“Lots of clubs are moving much earlier in the summer as well now, to get ahead of the game moving forward. And of course, we’ve got a Euros this summer which always just puts another slant on things in terms of clubs wanting to get business done early in that European market in particular.”
Rangers begin internal transfer talks at Ibrox
Plans change and within the football world that is even more of a thing, but Rangers should have been planning for this for a while.
Barisic hasn’t been playing regularly since the turn of the year after losing his place in the team to Ridvan Yilmaz and while Lundstram has been a regular all season, neither player has signed anything to be at Ibrox next season.
While the plan may have initially been to give them both a new deal at one time or another, the people upstairs should have been making plans for the scenario that is occurring now.

It would make sense for Rangers to have plans in place, not only for their departures but also for their replacements, and that means knowing the financial situation involved.
Now it seems more likely that they will be leaving than staying next season, so that means extra money in the bank to go towards rebuilding the squad under Clement.
In other Rangers news, the club are optimistic about completing an “unbelievable” transfer deal with a £20m sale mooted already.
