Rangers: Philippe Clement told to shut up about controversial Ibrox incident vs Motherwell

Philippe Clement has been told to stop complaining about Scottish football after Ross McCausland’s injury as Rangers lost to Motherwell, by Tam McManus.

The pundit took to Twitter on 2 March after the 2-1 home loss at Ibrox in which the Gers winger was withdrawn hurt in the first half following a clash with Dan Casey, with the Light Blues boss questioning the lack of any sort of reaction from the officials.

The Belgian said McCausland had been “kicked off the pitch” and couldn’t walk as a result, proving “something really bad happened”, but McManus put it down to the physical nature of the SPFL and dismissed the comments as the manager crying about it.

He wrote: “That’s Scottish Football for better or for worse. Very physical league no point greetin about it.”

Rangers can scarcely afford to lose many more attacking players after excellent January signing Oscar Cortes was ruled out long-term and the likes of Todd Cantwell and Rabbi Matondo out on top of Danilo and Abdallah Sima.

So it was little surprise that Clement was unhappy with the situation after the youngster had to go off as well.

It could certainly be argued that Casey flew in with more force than was required and was out of control as he caught McCausland high, and while he got the ball first challenges are frequently sanctioned for the follow through.

Clement was likely citing red cards for Dujon Sterling and Jose Cifuentes since he arrived at Ibrox, with both seeing ban appeals rejected for what looked like strong yellow-card challenges.

In both cases a strict interpretation of the laws left the door open for a red, and neither could categorically be ruled out as dismissals, but when the officiating switched to be far more lenient in the challenge against Motherwell the manager was left confused.
