Barry Ferguson shares what wows him about ‘exciting’ Mohamed Diomande transfer as window shuts

Barry Ferguson believes Rangers have completed a “shrewd” bit of business with the signing of “exciting” midfielder talent Mohamed Diomande.

The former Rangers footballer and pundit praised the move in his Daily Record column (2 February) sharing that the Gers have landed such a talent without having to stump up a significant fee until the summer.

Rangers signed the talented midfielder Diomande from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland well before Thursday’s 11pm deadline, (1 February) on an initial loan deal, with an obligation to buy in the summer.

The Scottish Premiership club will pay a fee in excess of £4.3million for the 22-year-old which Ferguson believes is “smart” financially as it allows Diomande the chance to bed in before sealing the move permanently.

He wrote: “The signing of Diomande looks particularly shrewd and not just because of the way the numbers were structured. They’ve landed an exciting talent on loan without having to stump up a significant fee until the summer.

“That’s smart financially but it also means the player will have an extra six months to bed into the squad and to familiarise himself with the club and with Scottish football. I suspect it might be next season until we see the best of him.”

Top addition

Rangers have only gone and picked up a major coup in the transfer market and just the kind of talent Philippe Clement needs in order to bolster his midfield ranks at Ibrox.

For a number of years now, Diomande has been one of the most prized midfield assets in Denmark and it’s been a real surprise that none of the well-renowned clubs in Europe made their move for him.

At just 22 years old, and having played 13 times for Nordsjaelland this season where he picked up three assists, Rangers have a real exciting talent on their hands with Diomande.

And it may not even take him until next season until we see the best of him as he certainly possesses the characteristics and talent to become an instant success at Ibrox.

A midfielder has always been high on the list of priorities at Ibrox this January as a result of the issues they have faced with squad depth and injuries to key players, often leading to Dujon Sterling filling in outside of his usual right-back position.

Diomande arrives at Ibrox with burgeoning promise and the potential to be an instant fan-favourite amongst the Rangers supporters possessing tremendous technical ability, vision and a workhorse-like mentality that the Gers have needed for a long while now.

Tremendous deal by Clement and recruitment chief Nils Koppen. Top signing.

In other Rangers news, one player’s exit from Ibrox might now be announced until March.
