Rabbi Matondo sale to raise Rangers funds in deadline-busting exit amid Germany transfer speculation

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson wouldn't lose any sleep if Rangers were to cash in on Rabbi Matondo before the transfer window closes at 11:30pm on Thursday.

Matondo, 23, has been loosely linked with a move to Bundesliga club Mainz with newspaper BILD speculating on Monday (29 January) that the ex-Schalke winger could make a return to Germany.

He's barely played this season, appearing in just four starting line-ups in the Scottish Premiership.

And while injuries have been an issue this season at Ibrox, Ferguson wouldn't be too worried if the Gers cash in on the enigmatic Wales international.

"Matondo is hit and miss. You don't know what you're going to get from him, " Ferguson told Ibrox News. "Sometimes he can produce a bit of magic and then the next thing, he's tripping over his own feet.

"If you look at Sima being injured and going into the latter stages of the season, we need a deep squad.

"There have been so many injuries but I don't think Matondo [leaving] would be one that hurts us too much. But if it doesn't materialise and he does stay with us, he can affect games.

"If he stays, I've got no qualms about it but if he leaves and we get a wee bit of money for him, it would be a good deal."
