Journalist moots Rangers loan deal for 'terrific' Kevin van Veen in January

Jonny McFarlane has suggested a five-month loan deal for Groningen striker Kevin van Veen would make sense for Rangers in January after the Ibrox club were linked with him in recent days.

The Newsquest Scotland journalist shared his view that, after Van Veen's performances during his time in Scotland with Motherwell, a short-term deal could appeal to Rangers.

This comes amid rumours that the Ibrox club could make a move for the 32-year-old after his record-breaking 29-goal season with Motherwell last year. [Daily Record, 27 December]

Speaking to The Rangers Review [27 December], McFarlane shared: "When he was in Scotland playing for Motherwell when he was a big fish in a small pond, he was absolutely terrific for them. If you look at his numbers, they speak for themselves.

"I don't think he would be expensive, so I would look at that and say, for a five-month loan, it makes absolute sense."

He is a proven goalscorer

With the January transfer window focus for Rangers seemingly resting on bringing a new striker to Ibrox, somebody with a proven track record of scoring goals in the SPFL may appeal to them, regardless of his age or where he is currently playing.

Frustrations surrounding the form and ability of Cyriel Dessers, and the patchy injury records of both Danilo and Kemar Roofe, have led the Ibrox club to hunt for a new first-choice forward to provide the goals in their title challenge.

A record-breaking 29-goal season last time out serves as evidence that Van Veen knows how to find the back of the net in Scotland, and while he is 32 and doesn't represent any sell-on fee, a loan deal could prove the perfect opportunity for Rangers to make their move.

It would be a move that suits all parties, giving the striker another crack at the SPFL with one of the Old Firm giants, while providing Rangers with a much-needed source of consistent goals.
