Rangers: Ianis Hagi days at Ibrox look numbered after comments made on loan at Alaves

Ianis Hagi may already have played his final game for Rangers after comments he made last week about his time on loan with Alaves.

The 25-year-old was sent to the Spanish side in August on a season-long loan after struggling for playing time at Ibrox.

Former fan favourite Hagi, who has made 99 appearances for the Gers, was unable to nail down a spot in the side after returning from a year-long lay-off.

Given the Romania international is under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season, he is technically set to return to Glasgow next summer.

However, it now seems more likely he will stay put at Alaves should a deal be agreed if a recent interview he has given is anything to go by.

Speaking on the LaLiga podcast [16 November], he said: “It has always been my favourite league and I have always followed it.

“I love Spanish football, the Spanish mentality. I’m in love with the country and the lifestyle here. I’m really enjoying my time here.”

Asked about Alaves in particular, Hagi said: “They are always ambitious and they align with who I am, my personality and mentality.”

As far as coded messages go, Hagi has made it quite clear he is loving life in LaLiga and it sounds as though he would happily stay put.

Even with Philippe Clement now in place, it is difficult to see a way back for Hagi at Ibrox should he return in the summer.

Hagi is reported to have cost Rangers around £4.5million to buy permanently in May 2020 [Daily Record], and they will want to recoup that sum.

While he is clearly a talented player who just needs to play regular football, he is not good enough to beg to return.

It may well be that Hagi is just trying to say the right things, but it looks more likely at this stage that his future now lies away from Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, a BBC Sport pundit has predicted the Gers’ January transfer activity, which he believes could centre on the developments of one player.
