Ridvan Yilmaz set for Rangers revival after fresh international call-up

Ridvan Yilmaz has been handed an opportunity to revive his Rangers career after being handed a Turkey callup which could see him make his first international appearance since 2022.

The defender has largely served as a backup so far this season and has struggled to play a part in Philippe Clement's plans so far, but an international call could be the chance to make an impression.

Yilmaz has been a source of frustration for Clement so far, particularly due to the decision to leave him out of the Europa League squad, leaving the new boss short of options.

However, if he can get some important minutes into his legs while on international duty, the call could provide him with an ideal opportunity to earn his place in the starting team at Ibrox.

Borna Barisic is the usual first-choice under Clement, but several disappointing displays both for Rangers and Croatia have seen him drop out of the international setup, and a lack of competition could be seen as the main reason his Ibrox place has remained secure.

The form of the Croatian has dipped this season, although it has shown signs of picking up under new management, he has remained unchallenged by Yilmaz despite Rangers splashing £5million on him just over a year ago [Sky Sports].

Yilmaz was heavily linked to a move away in the summer, particularly after Michael Beale opted not to include him in the Europa League side, with Galatasaray and Fenerbahce both linked, but he has remained at Rangers and chosen to fight for his place, and that he will do.

Yilmaz had also been linked with a move back to Besiktas, the club from whom he joined the Glasgow side, but the club president claimed he would be playing more games at Rangers this season [SportsDigitale, 12 September] – which has turned out not to be the case so far.
