Rangers transfer news as Carlton Palmer urges Stefan Johansen move

Carlton Palmer has said that he believes Rangers will be looking to sign Stefan Johansen on a free transfer after he left QPR at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old Norwegian international was their club captain last year but departed Loftus Road after a mutual termination of his contract was agreed and has yet to decide his next career move.

A former Celtic star, Johansen made 114 appearances for the Hoops before multiple Championship spells with Fulham, West Brom and QPR but former England international Palmer believes Michael Beale will be interested in bringing Johansen across the Glasgow divide.

Speaking to Give Me Sport (19 September) Palmer said: “Stefan Johansen is a very, very good footballer. I think maybe Glasgow Rangers might have a little look at him on a free. He is an experienced midfielder that can play really, really well, and play at a high level.

“He’s available, has experience, and has worked with the previous manager.”

Beale and Johansen worked well together during the short period the now Ibrox boss was in charge at Loftus Road and that could see him make a move for the Norwegian, especially as he looks for consistent performances after a poor start to the season.

The 32-year-old was very effective from the base of midfield in England’s second tier last season and if deployed in a similar role in Glasgow he could be a very effective creative force having resisted eight goal involvements in 21 starts last year.

But you’d have to imagine that should the Gers be keen to add to their ranks in the free-agent market, they would have done so by no and it also seems likely that Beale would have more pressing areas to strengthen the pitch before adding to his midfield.

Given Johansen’s history with Celtic, this seems like a move that is very unlikely to happen unless Rangers pick up one or two injuries in the middle of the park. But if this season has taught us anything, you can always expect the unexpected at Ibrox.
