Alan McGregor has left Rangers after spending the majority of his career at his boyhood club and handed one piece of advice to his replacement as he has told Jack Butland to "just go an enjoy it", via Football Scotland.

The former Rangers number one made way for his replacement in a testimonial match against Newcastle, in a passing of the baton moment after spending the last five years playing for the club he supported as a boy, and his words to his replacement are typically moving.

McGregor revealed: "I just said to him go and enjoy it. I said it's the best club in the world, just go and enjoy it". This simple but emotional message is typical of a man who embodied what Rangers is all about.

Up to Butland to wear the shirt with pride

These words will not have been lost on Butland, with the Englishman already integrating himself with the club, as he previously revealed how impressed he has been since his arrival and laid out his aims for his time at the club.

In his own interview with RangersTV following his arrival at the club, Butland called Rangers "an incredible club to join", referencing "the history and ultimately [aiming] to be successful, that is this club’s goals every year, is to be successful and to win.”

The ex-Crystal Palace man also commented that he will look to follow in the footsteps of legendary Gers goalkeepers, including McGregor and Andy Goram, stating that he will continue the club’s rich history of goalkeepers through his actions on and off the pitch.

The moment felt like the end of one era and the beginning of another, as Butland collects McGregor's number one shirt to represent Rangers and to wear it with pride, following in the footsteps of a legend.
