Simon Jordan and Jim White react to Rangers confirmation of Alfredo Morelos summer exit

Simon Jordan and Jim White believe Rangers have arguably made the right decision to allow Alfredo Morelos to leave the club this summer.

The club officially announced on Tuesday (23 May) that five players including Morelos will not have their contracts renewed and will leave Ibrox this summer, with Morelos and Ryan Kent among them.

And reacting to the official news live on talkSPORT (23 May, 11:55), White admitted that he didn’t feel fans would be too concerned about that while Jordan called for a changing of the guard

“Some high profile departures at Rangers in Glasgow,” White said. “Filip Helander is leaving the football club. Scott Arfield I’m hearing is leaving the football club. And Alfredo Morelos is out of Ibrox as well.

“Morelos is probably the highest profile departure there, I’m not entirely sure that many Rangers fans will be disappointed to hear that,” White said.

“Well, he’s scored a lot of goals for them,” White responded.

“He also brought a lot of challenges, forever getting sent off when Steven Gerrard was there. Maybe it’s the change of the guard.

“Sometimes it’s always darkest before the dawn. Rangers need to come again and maybe Morelos now is part of the past and there needs to be a new breed of player who actually understands that Rangers’ job in this world is to continue, or to try to win leagues and to arrest what is beginning to become a monopoly again from Celtic.”

New era

None of the news that came out on Tuesday from the club was unexpected. In truth, we’ve all known these players would be leaving for a while now.

But it doesn’t change the fact that it’s big news to hear that they will both be leaving for free, especially Morelos considering the relationship he has with Michael Beale.

The manager needs to shape the new squad in his image for next season though and he has been quite ruthless with his decisions here.

It’s only a positive thing for Rangers in the short-term and for the future, although it’s hard to forget that we could have got well into eight-figures for those two players as recently as two years ago.

But as Jordan said, it’s a new era at Rangers now and a changing of the guard is firmly underway. Rangers fans should be excited to see what comes next.
