Rangers transfer news: Mateusz Zukowski update emerges amid nightmare Lech Poznan loan

Mateusz Zukowski is heading back to Rangers after Lech Poznan opted not to make his loan move permanent this summer, according to the Scottish Sun.

The 21-year-old arrived at Ibrox originally prior to last season but only made a single senior Gers appearance in the Scottish Cup before he went back to Poland on a temporary move.

But he has only made three first-team appearances, totalling less than 90 minutes in the Ekstraklasa, and hasn’t been seen in senior action since 23 October [Transfermarkt].

And as such The Sun reports that Poznan have not exercised the option in his deal and he is now set to return to Rangers.

Spanner in the works

It looks hard to dress this development up as a positive for Michael Beale, as he has just landed a deal for Dujon Sterling in the right-back position so doesn’t need an extra body there.

The manager may wish to have a look at Zukowski himself in preseason, having arrived after the youngster had gone on loan to Poland, but based on how things have gone for him over the past two seasons it seems unlikely that he would suddenly wow the Gers boss.

James Tavernier is still slated for the lion’s share of the action on the right of the back line, and with Adam Devine also available there looks to be little room for the £400,000 signing of two years ago.

That investment is looking pretty dreadful currently, especially at a time when Beale needs every penny he can get his hands on to strengthen this summer.

And while it is hardly a bank-breaking deal it still is currently shaping up to be wasted money unless a surprising turn of events comes about at Auchenhowie or another side comes in with a bid.

Shifting players off the wage bill is currently in order if they aren’t set to play a role at the club, so having a player landing back on it when his prospects look fairly bleak isn’t what Beale will have been hoping for.

In other Rangers news, a much more expensive deal looks to be struggling and a current Ibrox ace has been tipped to fill the void.
