Jack Butland accepts pay cut to edge closer to permanent Rangers transfer

Jack Butland has agreed to take a pay cut to fit into the Rangers wage structure and is set to join on a free transfer this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Butland is wanted to become the new number one at Ibrox with Allan McGregor set to retire and the future of Jon McLaughlin up in the air.

But after several conflicting reports, including one that Manchester United were trying to hijack the deal, it now seems that a deal is close to get him to commit to joining Rangers for next season.

“Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland is close to agreeing a move to Rangers after showing a willingness to fit into their wage structure,” they wrote (19 May).

“The 30-year old, who is currently on loan at Manchester United as cover for David de Gea, was eager to play regular football again but initially his salary was deemed too expensive for Rangers.

“However, knowing that Rangers manager Michael Beale really wanted him at Ibrox, Butland has agreed a compromise on his personal terms and is closing on a move north of the border.”

Amazing

Rangers are absolutely desperate to bring in a top quality goalkeeper for next season and Butland could be just that.

He is a capped England international and while he hasn’t played regularly for several years, it’s a similar deal to the one that saw Celtic bring in Joe Hart and that has worked out pretty well for them.

Robby McCrorie has done exceptionally well in his two appearances this season and is likely to keep the shirt for the rest of the season, but Butland brings a different level of experience and quality.

The fact he is agreeing to a pay cut to join tells you that he wants to be here and is keen to become the number one, and that says a lot considering he could just stay at Old Trafford and spend more time on the bench while earning more cash.

It’s a great start to the summer window with so many deals seemingly on the verge of being done, and things are looking positive for the new season.

In other Rangers news, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on a potential transfer that has entered the “crucial” stages.
