Rangers transfer news as Kieran Dowell confirmed to leave Norwich ahead of presumed Ibrox switch

Rangers target Kieran Dowell has been confirmed as leaving Norwich in the summer, with a switch to Ibrox reportedly on the cards.

His current contract at Carrow Road expires at the end of the season and they have now officially confirmed he will leave the club.

Michael Beale is thought to be after the midfielder and a handshake agreement has reportedly already been reached to sign for the Light Blues [Daily Record, 4 May].

The Canaries confirmed in a statement on their website on Friday afternoon (5 May): “Norwich City can confirm that Sam Byram, Kieran Dowell and Michael McGovern will leave the football club when their respective contracts expire this summer…

“Dowell will leave the club having made 75 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals…

“Sporting director Stuart Webber said: “I’d like to thank the boys for their contribution to the club over the time they have been with us.

“Michael has enjoyed two promotions and has been an outstanding professional throughout his time with us. Kieran and Sam both enjoyed being in the squad for the record-breaking points tally we have achieved in the Championship in 2021, with Kieran scoring some valuable goals during the run in.

“We wish all of the players well. They know that they are all, along with their families, welcome back at Carrow Road or the Lotus Training Centre any time.”

Closing in

With players set to be on their way out of Rangers in numbers at the conclusion of the campaign there is going to need to be a significant number heading in the opposite direction.

Beale has already picked off one unwanted Norwich man by signing Todd Cantwell in the January transfer window, and indications are that he is set to double the quota of former Canaries.

It was already expected that Dowell was on the move but the latest confirmation rules out an 11th-hour new deal in the style of Connor Goldson’s surprise extension last summer.

Some supporters may be underwhelmed by an out-of-contract player from the English Championship, but Cantwell has appeared a solid addition so far.

And five goals with three assists in the league this year while not getting extensive game time is a decent return for Dowell.

The 25-year-old is likely to one of many to come in and there is unlikely to be a giant war chest available to fund the haul, so a few free transfers are probably inevitable and this one just got one step closer.

In other Rangers news, one player has already left Ibrox as their season is over and their future is not yet confirmed.
