Ally McCoist: Connor Goldson 'has to play' for Rangers v Celtic in Scottish Cup semi-final
Ally McCoist believes Connor Goldson has to play for Rangers in their Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic to stop Kyogo running rampant.
The central defender has missed the last three games with an injury picked up in training, but Michael Beale is hopeful that he will be able to return at Hampden Park on Sunday (30 April).
And McCoist, speaking on The Overlap (24 April), believes his fitness is “massive” to Rangers’ chance of success of stopping the Celtic star who he compared to Erling Haaland.
“He [Kyogo] plays on the shoulder and he’s only interested in finishing,” he said.
“He’s the same as Haaland in the respect that he doesn’t really want to get involved in the game. Completely different player, I get that, but they’ll get involved and link up a little bit but he just wants to position himself for a finish because that’s his strength, and he’s very, very good at it.
“So Rangers defensively, the two centre-backs.. Goldson is key I think. He has to play. I think that’s massive, absolutely massive.”

When asked if he’d play Ben Davies or John Souttar alongside him, he was adamant he wanted Davies in the side with Goldson.
Trouble
Rangers had a fantastic chance of winning the SPFL game at Parkhead a few weeks ago until Goldson got ruled out through injury when the team sheets dropped.
Immediately the confidence of every Rangers fan dropped, and it’s no surprise that we ended up conceding three goals that were all easily avoidable without him.
That shows his importance and quality to the side, and after seeing how Davies and Souttar played alongside eachother without him, we need him back ASAP for this game.
A defeat ends our season very early and gives us nothing left to play for, so even if Goldson isn’t 100% but is capable of playing then he needs to start the game.
McCoist is spot on about Kyogo being a huge threat who just wants to finish, and it’s no coincidence that he’s the top scorer in the country again. We need to stop him if we want a chance of being victorious and making the final.
In other Rangers news, transfer twist emerges as Beale may be forced to change his mind due to a “limited budget”.
