Scott Arfield reveals Falkirk hopes with Rangers veteran headed for Ibrox exit

Scott Arfield has revealed he would love to return to Falkirk as a player or manager as the midfielder hovers around the Rangers exit.

The 34-year-old Canadian international’s Ibrox contract is up in the summer and there have so far been few indications that his five-year stay in Glasgow is set to be extended.

Michael Beale is likely to overhaul his squad significantly at the end of the current campaign, so with a potential departure currently on the cards the midfielder has explained his plans to return to the Scottish League One club.

The midfielder told the Scottish Sun of his Bairns past: “I loved it and they gave me the chance to live my dream.

“I hope one day, in a playing or managerial capacity, to go back to the club. They gave me a chance as a youngster and I won’t forget that.

“They had no money, so they had to promote youngsters.

“I wish some other teams would go down a similar path. There are a lot of good players in the Scottish game, but they need a chance.”

Homecoming

Arfield has been a strong servant to Rangers since arriving from Burnley five seasons ago, making well over 200 appearances between then and now.

But the way the Light Blues have fallen behind Celtic domestically since the 55th title win has shown that a new era needs to be ushered in.

Beale’s arrival and his two summer signings Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin have signified the process is already under way, and directly impacted the veteran’s playing time.

Rangers

Despite his role in the league-winning exploits the club are in no position to be sentimental this summer when it comes to assessing their options, with space needed on the wage bill for new recruits.

Clearly the man who has scored 42 times in his time with the Gers has an eye on the future as well, and whether he would be in line for an immediate return to Falkirk upon departure or would look to remain in the SPFL for now he obviously has designs on going back to where it started.

In other Rangers news, there may now be as much as £15million opened up on the wage bill from the players who look headed to the exit.
