Chris Sutton rages at ‘pathetic’ Rangers amid fan lockout from Old Firm clash v Celtic

Chris Sutton has lashed out at Rangers for their part in the situation that has seen away fans locked out of Old Firm derby clashes all season.

The two Glasgow giants will go head-to-head in a potential title decider at Parkhead on Saturday (8 April), but there will once again be no away fans after an agreement couldn’t be found between clubs and police.

But Sutton has lashed out at Rangers for being “petty” in talks and speaking on the Record Sport Celtic Podcast (4 April) said it was “absolutely ridiculous”.

Rangers

“I don’t like the fans’ situation at all,” he said.

“It’s rubbish for Scottish football. I think having no away fans is rubbish for the perception of Scottish football. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

“When I first joined Celtic, going to Ibrox and having 7500 behind the goal and likewise when Rangers came to Celtic Park made it a far better spectacle. It’s shameful and a really bad look for Scottish football around the world.

“I just think it’s petty, and it’s something Rangers really need to sort out. I can’t see the upside over all this? What is the benefit of banning away fans from the fixture? This game is big around the world and the lockout is pathetic.

“I think if you asked both sets of supporters, they would say the same thing. It’s ridiculous and it diminishes the spectacle.”

Rubbish

Obviously it’s a very rubbish thing for Rangers fans to not be allowed at Celtic’s ground for the Old Firm clash and vice versa, but to put the blame on us is mental.

Both sets of fans have had their massive issues in these games, and it’s down to both clubs to protect each other and come to an agreement.

If that can’t be done it’s down to both sides, not just one, and Sutton is just showing his bias as usual for the green side of the city.

The cup games between the clubs show that it’s more than possible to get a game on between the sides with fans in attendance from both teams, so hopefully next season we will be able to get back to that.

Both sets of fans want it and surely the clubs do too, so it will get sorted, and hopefully next season we can get back to what it used to be.
