Another Ross Wilson failure emerges in last 48 hours, he must leave Rangers now

Yet another Ross Wilson transfer failure has emerged in the last 48 hours which should now spell the end of his tenure as Rangers sporting director.

Former Rangers defender and TV pundit Craig Moore revealed on Thursday [GoRadio, 16 March] that he gave the club a recommendation to sign Napoli forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia which was ignored by Wilson.

The Georgian international has risen to European stardom with the Serie A leaders this season after sealing a £10m move to the Italian giants last summer from Dinamo Batumi.

And Moore explained that he mentioned the Napoli star to Wilson but the Gers sporting director stuck to his own transfer targets and didn’t want to take a risk on an unknown quantity.

He said: “I did throw the little Malteser at Rangers saying ‘is this not somebody you could maybe look at? Get him in on loan with an option to buy, because it’s not going to happen here in the UK’. Rangers were set at that time with their recruitment and their signings, and the next minute I saw him pop up at Napoli for £10m.”

Wilson has certainly cut a much-maligned figure in recent months with his past transfer business coming under mounting scrutiny and criticism, especially following the club’s damaging loss to Celtic in the Viaplay Cup final – a game which highlighted the gulf in class between the two teams and their recruitment policies.

Underneath a Tweet by the club’s official account featuring Beale’s press conference, supporters attached photos of Wilson and other board members, calling them to be sacked.

The Gers chief also came under scrutiny in December for the club’s transfers, an issue which came to light once again when Beale stated earlier in February that the Gers have too many players on their books and that he’d like to cut the group down by 11 or 12 players this summer, which came as a huge punt at Wilson to cut the squad down.

Now yet another Wilson failure has emerged with the Gers chief missing out on a chance to sign a now world-renowned footballer who could well have handed the Light Blues the impetus to mount a serious challenge on Celtic and arguably even had made the crucial difference in winning last month’s League Cup final.

It is embarrassing for the club and most of all the fans, who are now seeing Celtic sign some unknown gems in the past year or so and turn them into potential world-beaters.

Major lessons need to be learned within the Gers’ recruitment team, especially from the Kvaratskhelia failure.

The club can no longer afford to miss out on signing potential gems with their Old Firm rivals now looking more advanced, complete and street-smart with their own recruitment policies and transfer dealings.

It may be time for Wilson to call it quits and the Gers to get in someone more competent with the Sporting Director role.

In other Rangers news, the SPFL will hold talks with Police Scotland before setting a date for the final Scottish Premiership clash between the Gers and Celtic.
