Rangers told to sign Kevin Nisbet after £2m BBC Sport transfer update on Wednesday

Barry Ferguson cannot understand why Rangers – or Celtic – aren’t making an attempt to sign Kevin Nisbet from Hibernian this month.

Nisbet, 25, has been on fire at Easter Road since the Scottish Premiership season resumed after the World Cup.

The Scotland international missed the first chunk of the season with a serious knee injury but since returning to action, he’s fired in seven goals in six top-flight appearances for Hibs.

BBC Sport reported on 25 January that Millwall have made a £2million bid plus add-ons to sign Nisbet after a £1million offer was rejected.

Ferguson would like to see his former club Rangers make a move for the Glasgow-born goal machine if £2million is the going price for him this month.

“It would be a great signing for Millwall, but it baffles me why Rangers or Celtic aren’t in. I was going to say he is a risk or a gamble but he’s not even that, he’s good enough to play for the Old Firm,” Ferguson told The Go Radio Football Show, as quoted by the Daily Record on Wednesday (25 January).

“I am surprised there has been no contact. Listen, there [are] a few days left and we have seen it in the past with good young players going for a couple of million like my nephew Lewis [Ferguson] and [Josh] Doig away to Italy as well, and [Aaron] Hickey before that.

“I like to see these young guys being kept in Scotland. I know eventually, they will move to the bigger leagues but for me Kevin Nisbet at £2million, I am taking him all day long.

“The biggest thing for me is it looks like he has physically matured now. He has got everything in his locker, but whether Hibs don’t want to do deals with Rangers or Celtic I don’t know, but if I am at Rangers I am really interested and want to do business.”

No-brainer

Why wouldn’t Rangers be trying to sign Nisbet?

The former Partick, Raith and Dunfermline striker is on fire at Easter Road right now and we could really use his goals.

Antonio Colak’s injury isn’t too concerning but we’re not sure what kind of striker we’re going to have when he’s back.

Kemar Roofe is always injured, Fashion Sakala is playing really well out wide and Alfredo Morelos has the potential to see his form drop off a cliff.

Nisbet scored against us back in December in his first game back after his serious knee injury.

Our worry is what he produced last season because five goals in 26 Scottish Premiership games is a very poor return.

Lawrence Shankland at Hearts could be a safer bet for Rangers but he may cost more than the £2millon Millwall are offering for Nisbet.

Should we gatecrash the London club’s move for the Hibs man?

It would make sense, really.

But we’re not going to lose any sleep about it if we don’t.
