Rangers: Neil Lennon baffled by Giovanni van Bronckhorst for 'unbelievable' Allan McGregor decision

Neil Lennon cannot get his head around why Jon McLaughlin started the season as Rangers’ number one goalkeeper instead of Allan McGregor.

McGregor, 40, was handed a new contract to keep him at Ibrox after last season finished but he was then demoted to the back-up goalkeeper by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

McLaughlin’s poor form this term has since seen McGregor return to the starting spot and he’s since turned in some very impressive performances.

The former Scotland international was man of the match on Tuesday (4 October) as the Light Blues lost to Liverpool in the Champions League and ex-Celtic boss Lennon has made it clearly how highly he rates the Ibrox shot-stopper.

“McGregor was unbelievable,” Lennon told talkSPORT on Thursday morning (6 October, 9:30am), as transcribed by HITC.

“I don’t understand why he wasn’t playing from the start of the season. That’s Gio’s decision. He’s just an unbelievable goalkeeper.”

Ridiculous

When Lennon is making a good point about Rangers, you know you’ve messed up badly.

What was going through van Bronckhorst’s head when he decided McGregor was better off being on the bench this season behind McLaughlin?

The former Burton Albion goalkeeper has never been in the same league as McGregor throughout his career and he doesn’t seem to be close now, even though he started the season as number one.

It was nonsensical and it just shows how desperate some of the decision-making at Ibrox has been with Ross Wilson in charge of recruitment.

It would have made more sense to release McGregor and sign a new goalkeeper than to do what van Bronckhorst ended up doing.

At least he’s seen sense since and changed it to way things were because McGregor’s responded with world-class performance after world-class performance.

McGregor is one of the greatest goalkeepers ever at Rangers and in Scottish football.

If we’re going to cling onto him for as long as possible, he needs to be a starter.

In other Rangers news, Michael Laudrup isn’t impressed with this one Gers player who’s fallen off the radar.
