Rangers star Alfredo Morelos surprisingly on radar of Mexican side Cruz Azul

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Mexican outfit Cruz Azul, according to El Futbolero.

The 25-year-old made his first appearance of the new Scottish Premiership season at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday (6 August( after a long period on the sidelines through injury.

The Colombian international made his triumphant return in style by scoring the second goal in a 2-0 win for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side at Ibrox.

But he has less than one year left on his current contract with the club and he could be free to agree terms elsewhere when the January transfer window opens.

Cruz Azul, who currently sit 11th in Liga MX after seven matches, have suddenly appeared as a team in the race to sign Morelos should he decide not to extend his stay at Ibrox beyond the end of this season.

No chance

If Morelos is going to leave Rangers at any point in the next year, it will not be to join a side in no man’s land in the Mexican leagues.

He has proved time and time again that he can mix it with some of Europe’s best and there should be a load of teams that would love to have him lead their attack and you can’t see why he would turn them down over a return to the Western Hemisphere.

The only chance he has to move back to that part of the world is once he nears a retirement age where he could play in his native Colombia to end his career.

But right now, his most likely destination is probably Glasgow because there has not been any serious attempt to sign him this summer and he will want his future secured sooner rather than later.

Maybe now he is back fit, bids could start flying in but van Bronckhorst has to resist if he can.

In other Rangers news, Chilean namesake Rangers De Talca were in town to watch the Kilmarnock clash but they could be staying to negotiate a fruitful affiliation.
