Rangers: Jack Ross plays down Glenn Middleton transfer talks

Dundee United manager Jack Ross has played down rumours linking his side with a summer move for Rangers winger Glenn Middleton.

Football Scotland reported on 20 July that the Tangerines had been in contact with the Light Blues over the 22-year-old with Atromitos in Greece also keen with Chris Coleman in charge.

Middleton is keen to find a place to call home having failed to make his impact at Ibrox and he spent the 2021-22 season out on loan at St Johnstone where he managed just one goal in 28 Scottish Premiership games.

Despite the rumours of a Tannadice move on the cards, Ross has seemingly quashed any chance of the deal, suggesting that it is just rumour and nothing else.

“When you are vocal in saying you want to strengthen the squad you will get linked with players,” said Ross, as quoted by the Dundee Courier.

“I spoke about wanting to get as many attacking options as I can. Other than that, there’s nothing more in it.”

Fresh start

At 22 years of age, Middleton really should have made his breakthrough in Glasgow by now if he were to be good enough to play for Rangers at any point.

The fact he is still comfortably out of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s plans should indicate to him and the club that he is on borrowed time at Ibrox and he really needs a move now.

But after such an underwhelming campaign with the Saints last season, would any Premiership side take a risk on him?

His best bet right now could be to drop into the Championship and find his swagger again to then gain some momentum and push to return to the top flight via transfer or promotion.

With Rabbi Matondo now signed to solve any wide problems van Bronckhorst may have had, his task to succeed at Rangers has become 10 times harder and it would be for the good of himself and the football club to part ways as soon as possible.
