Rangers could still bring in new defender, Giovanni van Bronckhorst confirms

There is still a very real chance that Rangers dip back into the transfer market to buy themselves a new left-back this summer.

With the imminent exit of Calvin Bassey to Dutch champions Ajax, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to be left with just Borna Barisic as a natural left-back in his squad but he doesn’t intend on that being the case for much longer.

The manager was actually impressed by the Croatian as the Light Blues steamrolled West Ham United 3-1 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday (19 July) with goals from Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo and Ryan Kent.

Despite Barisic’s good display though, he may still be in line for a replacement and van Bronckhorst confirmed his desire to sign a new left-back after the game.

“We had games last season we didn’t extend the lead when on top. Tom and Rabbi will help prevent that,” the boss said, as quoted by Heart and Hand. “I was very pleased with Borna also but I will look at it if a possibility comes up to add in that area.”

Perfect

Rangers are well aware of the positions they need to strengthen and they have already made steps to resolve those problems in other areas already with their signing so far this summer.

They needed a striker, they signed Antonio Colak. They needed a winger, they signed Matondo. They needed some creativity in midfield, they signed not only Lawrence but also Malik Tillman from Bayern Munich.

Two new centre-halves have also come in with John Souttar and, more recently, Ben Davies with only perhaps two areas left to improve before the season begins.

Left-back is the most obvious position although that is more of a depth issue than a quality one as van Bronckhorst would probably be content with Barisic as his number one choice there this season.

There could be an argument to suggest that Rangers also need a new number one goalkeeper with Jon McLaughlin very unproven at a high level and Allan McGregor set to turn 41 years of age before the 2022-23 season is out.

In other Rangers news, Heart and Hand took a swipe at this European side after they reportedly lodged an £8million bid for one of the Bears’ key players.
