Rangers want to sign another defender after £4m deal for Ben Davies agreed - Fraser Fletcher
Rangers are still in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer despite agreeing a £4m deal with Liverpool for defender Ben Davies, says Fraser Fletcher.
The light blues agreed a deal for the Premier League defender on Sunday night [July 17], with an initial £3m payment with add-ons taking it up to £4m [Fabrizio Romano].
But with Calvin Bassey set to sign for Ajax in a club-record sale of around £23m, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is still looking to add more defensive options to his squad and the club remain in the market.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, ex BBC journalist Fletcher said, “Rangers have agreed fee for Ben Davies today in 4 million pound deal as reported. Club also still in market for more defensive options I understand.”
As swift as the business for Davies was, most fans will be absolutely delighted to hear that the club aren’t trying to directly replace Bassey with him.
For a start he’s nowhere near as good, but he’s also four years older and not played any competitive football since January 2020. Despite the move to Liverpool, he never played a single first-team game for them.
Bassey was also capable of playing at left-back to a high level as we saw a lot last season, with his impressive performances a big part of the club making it to the Europa League final and winning the Scottish Cup.
Barisic had a decent end to the season, but the middle part of the campaign where he was dropped for bad performances is concerning and shows that he can’t be relied on to be the number one man – especially with no competition.
Hopefully a great young left-back can be brought in to help really replace Bassey as the club moves on to a new chapter without our two African superstars.
