Rangers defender Calvin Bassey to join Ajax in Austrian training camp, deal to be done within days
Rangers’ Calvin Bassey could link up with the Ajax squad in their pre-season training camp in Austria, according to Algemeen Dagblad.
The Dutch newspaper reported on Saturday (16 July) that Ajax head out to Austria on Sunday (17 July) and will be there for a week, were they’ll play Red Bull Salzburg and Frankfurt.
Sky Sports claim Ajax have agreed to pay an initial fee worth £18.7million for Bassey, 22, but that could rise to £22.9million due to add-ons. It is understood that a 10 per cent sell-on fee has also been agreed.
What next for Rangers?
It should go without saying but Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs to replace Bassey.
While we don’t expect to see him pump £20million back into the squad on one player, we would like to see a new left-back and another centre-back brought in.
Borna Barisic lost out to Bassey at times when it came to the race for the left-back spot last season but the Croatian did show some improvement at the back end of the campaign with Bassey playing as a centre-back.
Either a new back-up left-back or an upgrade on Barisic would be great.
It’d also make a lot of sense for the Gers to sign a new centre-back because as it stands, van Bronckhorst’s options aren’t as amazing as we’d like them to be.
John Souttar and Connor Goldson are fine but Filip Helander’s had loads of injury issues and Nikola Katic might not be the same player we saw at Ibrox before his long-term injury. Jack Simpson is also on the books – but forget about that – and James Sands doesn’t fill us with much confidence.
It’ll be interesting to see how the money is pumped back into the squad but we would hope to see more than just free agents and loanees heading to Ibrox this summer.
