Rangers news: Joe Aribo could undergo Southampton medical on Thursday - Sky Sports journalist

Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo could undergo his medical at Southampton on Thursday, 7 July, according to Sky Sports and Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on 6 July, Barrie reported that the 25-year-old’s move from Ibrox to St Mary’s is “very close” to completion.

Aribo’s move to Southampton is set to be worth a total of £10million for the Gers with an initial fee of £6million being paid up front by the Saints [David Ornstein].

Goodbye, Joe

It’s never nice waving goodbye to a quality player.

Aribo got better and better with each season he had as a Rangers player and that culminated with him winning the Scottish Cup and scoring in a Europa League final.

Not many Rangers players over the years have been able to say they’ve scored in a European final but Aribo leaves Ibrox in a small club that contains the likes of Willie Johnston, Colin Stein and Alexander Scott.

Considering he’s in the final year of his contract with the Light Blues, a £10million deal for Aribo isn’t bad.

It’s matched his release clause but it just goes to show that the Gers probably should have done more to get rid of that clause and get him tied down for longer way before last season ended.

Still, a move to Southampton is a good move for him and that £10million will go a long way for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to strengthen his squad.

It’s something he really needs to do now.

Aribo’s on his way out and while Antonio Colak looks to be coming in, we’re a week into July and John Souttar is the only new arrival.

A lot of work needs to be done by Ross Wilson and van Bronckhorst.

Let’s hope this Aribo deal opens the floodgates.

In other Rangers news, this player is set to sign for the Gers and jet out to Portugal to join up with the squad at their pre-season training camp.
