Southampton favourites to sign Rangers star Joe Aribo in £24m double transfer swoop
Southampton are in pole position to sign Rangers star Joe Aribo this summer in a £10million deal, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.
The newspaper reported via their print edition on Tuesday (5 July, page 71) that Nottingham Forest and Fulham are also keen on the 25-year-old Nigeria international, who’s entered the final year of his contract at Ibrox.
It is understood that Aribo “looks increasingly likely to leave Glasgow” this summer with Southampton keen to get their business done early.
The Scottish Daily Mail claims that the Saints are also closing in on Manchester City midfielder Romeo Lavia and there’ll be a medical in the next 48 hours to complete the signing of the young Belgian for £14million.
Need to sell
Rangers cannot run the risk of losing Aribo on a free transfer next year otherwise the quality of the squad will start to go backwards.
Aribo was easily one of the best players at the club last season but there have been times where he’s lacked consistency and had injury issues.
If we get £10million for him, that would be good business considering the fact that he’d leave for free next year if he’s not sold this summer and doesn’t sign a new contract.
And based on the fact he hasn’t signed a new contract yet, we’d suggest that Aribo isn’t going to pen fresh terms because he might want a move back to England to play in the Premier League.
It would be a good move for him to go to Southampton, a club where many former SPFL players have flourished over the years whether they’ve previously been at Rangers or Celtic.
One player who can attest to that is Steven Davis.
Let’s hope he doesn’t sell the move too well to Aribo but we would like to start seeing some progress in selling players if they’re not going to sign new deals.
In other Rangers news, alarm bells are ringing at Ibrox over the move to seal this big-money signing.
