Trabzonspor close in on deal to sign Rangers left-back Borna Barisic in potential multi-million transfer

Turkish champions Trabzonspor are “closing in” on a deal to sign Rangers left-back Borna Barisic this summer, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported via their live blog on 15 June (04:26pm) that Trabzonspor have also tabled a £3.4million bid for Aston Villa attacker Trezeguet as they aim to improve the squad ahead of a 2022/23 Champions League group stage campaign.

It is understood that their manager Abdullah Avci is close to signing Barisic, 29, from Rangers and Football Scotland have previously reported on 10 June that the Scottish Cup champions want £4million for the left-back.

Get rid

If Trabzonspor are offering an acceptable wad of cash for Barisic then it’s a no-brainer for Rangers – they must sell him.

Barisic ended the 2021/22 season well but the majority of the campaign saw the Croatian really struggle and at times, his performances were completely and utterly embarrassing.

We still haven’t forgotten his abomination of a display against Celtic in early February when he basically surrendered to their attackers for one of their goals.

Barisic is a weak defender and while he can offer a threat going forward, he assisted just three goals in 43 appearances in all competitions in 2021/22. In comparison, he scored five and assisted 14 times the season before when we won the long.

Barisic is going backwards.

He might play well every now and then but that shouldn’t fool anyone because Rangers cannot afford to have players who decide to up their game every now and then.

Barisic will also turn 30 before the end of the year and is in the final 24 months of his contract at Ibrox.

If there’s a time to sell him, it’s now.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have their sights on a new defender who’s been deemed as surplus to requirements south of the border.
