Rangers to make a loss on Cedric Itten as Swiss striker heads for £1.55million Young Boys move

Rangers are set to make on loss on Cedric Itten as the misfit striker is on the brink of signing a deal to move to Young Boys, the Daily Record reports.

The 25-year-old is surplus to requirements at Ibrox as he was unable to force his way into the first team even when Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe were both ruled out with injury.

After spending the first half of the season on loan in the Bundesliga with Greuther Furth where he scored twice, the Swiss international made eight appearances back at the club, scoring only against fourth tier Stirling Albion in the cup, and in the final game of the season against Hearts alongside reserves and youth players.

Itten is set to sign a four-year deal back in Switzerland and will cost £1.55million just two seasons after signing from St. Gallen for £2.7million.

In that time he has scored a total of eight goals in 48 appearances and is “keen to return home” according to the Record report.

For the best

The move to Ibrox has to go down as an unsuccessful one, as instead of building on a debut season where he was more heavily involved, without scoring prolifically, he went backwards.

The writing was surely on the wall once Morelos was ruled out following thigh surgery and then Roofe went down right at the business end of the season.

That should have been the unexpected opportunity he needed to drop right in his lap, but instead Giovanni van Bronckhorst preferred Fashion Sakala, Scott Wright and Joe Aribo.

The manager clearly does not rate him, so the club have taken what money they can get, which is less of an issue thanks to the Europa League run bringing in sizeable income.

But it is still disappointing for him to lose close to half his value in just two seasons in Glasgow when the club hardly has money to waste.

The club will likely be looking for a young back-up and, if interest materialises for Morelos despite his injury recovery, also an established starter.

Kenny Miller has told them to look at Everton’s Ellis Simms who has just finished a successful loan with Hearts.

In other Rangers news, a former England international has been lined up to replace the potential exit of a first team star.
