Tam McManus believes Giovanni van Bronckhorst already knows his Rangers cup final team

Tam McManus believes Giovanni van Bronckhorst already knows what team he will select for both of Rangers cup finals this season if everyone is fit to play.

Rangers will take on Frankfurt in the Europa League final in Seville on May 18th, before facing Hearts in the Scottish Cup final on May 21st.

With the Scottish Premiership title out of reach, BBC pundit McManus told PLZ Soccer [May 9] that despite Van Bronckhorst claiming there are places up for grabs for the final he will already know his team for those crunch games if everyone is available.

“It’s amazing how managers always say that, ‘there’s places to be played for, there’s places up for grabs’ in their team,” he said.

“I think he’ll know his team, if they’re all fit he’ll know his team. It’ll be along the lines of the semi-final against Leipzig.

“I think the next two games he’ll just try and play as many players as he can, give opportunities to a few younger boys, a few squad players.

“That game against Hearts could be two under-18 teams the week before the cup final. That’ll be a game that means very, very little to either team.

“So I think we’ll see a lot of young boys getting played in either team. I think Rangers will just tick over and try to keep everybody fit and fresh for the finals.”

There’s nothing wrong with Van Bronckhorst knowing his team for the finals, in fact it’s probably a positive thing for Rangers at this point.

But there’s also no harm in places being up for grabs based on positive form. For example if Amad Diallo was to turn in phenomenal performances, he could force a change of mind from the boss and get the nod.

It’s important to have an open mind ahead of time, but it shows that the manager has got his priorities in order at this point.

The league title is done for but the club can still have an incredibly successful campaign by winning trophies and that will take lots of hard work and planning over the next two weeks.

But if the manager does know his best team, that can only be a good thing for preparation and the team will have a better chance of success on the day than if it was thrown together a few days prior.
