Rangers want to sign Paul Akouokou from Real Betis this summer
Rangers are interested in signing Real Betis midfielder Paul Akouokou this summer and face competition from Almeria, according to AS.
The Bears are expected to have a busy summer window with ten first-team players out of contract between now and the summer of 2023.
After reaching the Europa League semi-final and taking Celtic to the limit in the Scottish Premiership title race, Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to bolster his squad to be able to compete again next year.
According to AS, Akouokou is expected to leave Betis after making just 11 appearances this season due to the competition for places in the squad.
He was part of the squad that won the Copa Del Rey and would be relatively cheap, and could come in as a replacement for Steven Davis in the holding midfield role from next season.
Unless you’re an avid watcher of La Liga, you won’t know much about the 24-year-old midfielder who could be playing at Ibrox next season.
The report from AS describes him as a ‘strong’ midfielder who is good at interceptions and breaking up play, while also being handy at set-pieces at both ends of the pitch because he stands at 6ft 2′ tall.
That sounds like a positive profile of player to come into Van Bronckhorst’s side, who likes to play possession football and has the excellent James Tavernier whipping in free-kicks and corners regularly.
But the player has just one international cap for the Ivory Coast and doesn’t have an awful lot of top level experience, so he would need time to adapt and come in to hit the levels needed.
Summer plans are clearly well underway for the squad rebuild though and Rangers are going to splash the cash in order to get in who they want.
