Defoe's brilliant 'whiskey tale' tribute to Rangers' kit man Jimmy Bell
Former Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has paid a fitting tribute Jimmy Bell, after the legendary Rangers’ kit man’s passing on Tuesday morning.
The club confirmed that Bell had passed away on Tuesday morning after 30 years as the Club’s kit man.
Defoe told of how Bell convinced him to have a shot of Scottish whiskey after Rangers’ 55th League title triumph, despite Defoe being teetotal.
Defoe wrote in an Instagram post: “Jimmy my friend, I’m absolutely gutted.
“It’s not often at a football club that someone becomes a legend without kicking a ball.”
Defoe added: “I remember being in the changing rooms, and you said to me ‘Weeman, go over there, in my bag, there’s something in there for you’.
“It was a bottle of whiskey.
“I’m obviously teetotal, so I gave it back to you and said ‘you’ve got to have a shot’.
“You said you better drink this right now, we’ve just won the league, it’s 55 titles, so you better drink it.”
Rangers win for Jimmy
Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s men will be looking to pay a fitting tribute to Bell by reaching the Europa League final on Thursday evening.
What promises to be an electric atmosphere will only be enhanced by the news of Bell’s passing.
Ibrox has proven to be a huge advantage for Rangers in their European campaign thus far.
Previous demolitions of Braga and Red Star Belgrade mean they should head into this semi-final firmly believing they can reach their first European final since 2008.
However, utilising the Ibrox crowd will be vital in making life for the German side, who currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga.
It is important that van Bronkhorst’s men don’t get too excited by the crowd, as Leipzig could be a threat on the counter attack.
However, they must make life tough and difficult for the German side whenever they can.
With an emotional Ibrox remembering Jimmy Bell, it looks set to be an emotional night in Glasgow.
