Rangers want to sign Eric Martel from RB Leipzig this summer - report
Rangers are monitoring RB Leipzig defensive starlet Eric Martel ahead of a potential summer transfer, according to a report by The Sun.
Martel made his first-team debut for the Bundesliga side last season but has spent this campaign in Austria with Austria Vienna, where he has made 30 appearances this season.
But the 19-year-old reportedly has no future in Germany, with the club telling him he is free to leave this summer and Rangers are monitoring his situation.
Martel is predominantly a central midfielder but he is also capable of playing a more defensive role and that versatility is something that appeals to Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
He was previously linked with a move to Manchester United after Ralf Rangnick’s arrival [The Sun], and while Rangers are yet to express any concrete interest they are keeping an eye on him.
He is also wanted by three Bundesliga sides – FC Koln, Union Berlin and Freiburg.
The summer is expected to be a busy one at Ibrox, with several first-team players seeing their contracts nearing an end and decisions need to be made.
That will mean that bodies need to come in and Van Bronckhorst will be keen to bring in some youth to what is seen as an ageing squad right now.
Martel would come in and offer cover in a number of positions and roles and seems like a natural replacement for the outgoing Steven Davis.
He has a good eye for a pass but defensively is astute, and his ability to play at a good standard has been seen already so it wouldn’t be too big of a gamble.
With that said he also wouldn’t expect to be a regular starter and would prove to be a solid squad option, something that is often forgotten about when fans are building squads and transfer windows.
