Chris Sutton warns Connor Goldson during Rangers v Celtic clash

Chris Sutton was left less than impressed by Rangers’ Connor Goldson’s first-half display during the Old Firm cup clash; and didn’t hold back on the 29-year-old.

The central defender took several loose touches in possession and was nearly punished by Daizen Maeda, having to dive in with a last-ditch challenge to prevent the Japanese from running through on goal.

Sutton picked up on Goldson’s shaky start and said live on Premier Sports he’d have to sharpen up before he was punished by his former side.

“He’s had one or two warnings now Connor Goldson. He should be more aware to it,” said Sutton.

Pressure On

Rangers have executed their game plan for this Scottish Cup semi-final pretty well so far, a high press forcing Joe Hart into several rushed clearances from which the Gers quickly recover possession.

However for that to work they need to ensure they remain streetwise when looking after the ball, and Goldson has already had several close calls where a heavy touch has nearly let a Celtic forward in on goal.

In such a huge game both individually and for the season as a whole, it’s crucial Rangers don’t give anything away cheaply to ruin what has been a promising first-half display from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men.

Goldson has played a big part in the recent success and has to sharpen up to keep his side in the race for a domestic trophy, with the league almost certainly already decided.
