Ally McCoist stunned by 'unbelievable' Rangers captain James Tavernier after what he did v Braga

Ally McCoist was lost for words after the first half performance of Rangers captain James Tavernier in their Europa League win over Braga.

The skipper took just 77 seconds to get on the scoresheet and give Rangers the advantage on the night, before slotting home a penalty just before half-time to make it 2-0.

Speaking during the half-time break while appearing as a pundit on BT Sport, McCoist couldn’t sing his praises enough calling him ‘unbelievable’ for his attacking output as a defender.

“The captain.. he’s unbelievable for a right-back getting into goalscoring opportunities,” he said.

“And make no mistake boys, that is some finish. Because that is the only place he can put that.

“Normally you’d say to a striker or somebody finishing to put that back across the goal, he can’t because the goalie’s got that covered.

“The finish is as tight an angle as possible, but he knows it and he knows exactly what he’s doing. Perfect start.

He could’ve had a hat-trick. The captain could have had a first-half hat-trick.”

Wow

Every top club in Europe has got that one man they can rely on to deliver the goods when the going gets tough, and for Rangers that man is Tavernier.

Time and time again he pops up with an important goal or assist in a big game and just when the team needed him most, he did it again here at Ibrox.

Despite being in his thirties now, it’s a shame that he’s never received a call-up for the England squad because his form deserves it and by performing in Europe he is showing he can play at the highest level.

McCoist couldn’t help but praise the finish for the first goal, and the composure to go down the middle for the penalty and second goal was immense too and deserves praise.

Time and time again he’s the man taking the headlines, and it’s about time he gets the praise he deserves for it. One of the very best Rangers have ever had.
