Michael Owen predicts Rangers scoreline v Borussia Dortmund in Europa League clash

Michael Owen expects Rangers to lose at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his men are in Germany ahead of the start of the knock-out rounds at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

It’s no doubt a tough tie for the Light Blues and while ex-Liverpool striker Owen is blown away by the size of the occasion, he’s predicted the Scottish champions to lose 2-0 at the hands of Dortmund.

Writing on the BetVictor website, Owen said: “What a tie for Rangers, this is what European football is all about. They couldn’t have got a much harder draw though; I’m sure van Bronckhorst will be aiming to get back to Glasgow still in this tie.

“It’s a big ask though as I think Dortmund will get the win; historically, they are so strong at home. 2-0 Dortmund, which wouldn’t be a disaster for Rangers.”

Low expectations

While there will be many Rangers fans out there who are confident of getting a result in Germany on Thursday night, we have to be realistic and accept that Owen might be right.

If we lose 2-0 to Dortmund, it will not be a disgrace. All we’re really asking for is a performance to make us proud and one that could potentially see the tie still left in the balance going back to Glasgow.

All it takes is for one goal by the Gers to make a drama out of things and that’s what we’re all really hoping for.

We’re boosted by the fact that Erling Haaland will be unavailable for Borussia Dortmund, who played pretty much a full-strength side as recently as Sunday when they won 3-0 away at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

As for us, van Bronckhorst managed to rest his key men on Saturday in the 3-0 win over Annan with our form going into the game being very strong.

Who knows? Owen could be completely wrong and we could be too.

Let’s hope that is the case.

In other Rangers news, these two players are ruled out and Borna Barisic is expected to start in our predicted line-up versus Dortmund.
