Rangers warned of 'significant' demands for January signing of John Souttar

Rangers have been warned by Hearts that it will take a ‘significant and satisfactory’ bid to bring John Souttar to Ibrox this month.

Rangers completed the signing of Souttar on a pre-contract agreement on Friday [Jan 14th], which will see him join in the summer on a free transfer after six years with Hearts.

But both the player and Rangers are keen to make a move happen this month, which has led to speculation of a bid going in before the transfer window closes [Barry Anderson].

Hearts have responded emphatically to the announcement of a pre-contract being agreed however, releasing a statement confirming their stance [via Daily Record].

“Heart of Midlothian Football Club notes Rangers Football Club’s announcement of John Souttar’s pre-contract signing.

“The club reiterates that John is an important member of the first-team squad and will remain so until the end of the season unless a significant and satisfactory offer is made during the January transfer window.

“No further comment will be made at this time.”

It seems as though there is a war brewing between the two clubs over the player, but it seems difficult for Hearts to come out on top.

Souttar has reportedly made it clear that he wants to leave this month rather than wait until the summer for a transfer and now that his destination is agreed and official, there’s only one more step to agree.

Hearts are well within their rights to ask for a sum of money they deem acceptable, but with fans turning on the 25-year-old defender already for announcing the move mid-season it will be tough.

Keeping an unhappy player during the season when you know he’s joining a rival is tough enough, but keeping him against his will too will make the situation nigh on impossible to deal with.

Rangers should look to get this deal done, so long as the costs aren’t extortionate, as it’s best for all parties.
