Alfredo Morelos could miss Rangers vs Celtic if he gets Colombia call up
Rangers could be without star striker Alfredo Morelos for the Old Firm derby against Celtic next month as he prepares for a call up to the Colombia national team.
Rangers saw their game against Celtic on January 2nd postponed until February 2nd as the Scottish Premier League brought forward it’s winter break due to COVID outbreaks across the country.
But the club could now be without star man Morelos for the game as the South American international break falls in in the same period as the Old Firm derby and Colombia are eyeing him for a call up [Daily Record].
While Morelos seems to have fallen out of favour with manager Reinaldo Rueda having not been called up to any squad since the Copa America tournament in the summer.
But with an injury to Duvan Zapata, the door is now open once again for Morelos to return to the squad.
Rangers will be praying that Rueda is still holding some sort of secret grudge against Morelos and overlooks him once more, because the club need him for their title run.
Morelos has found form once again under Giovanni van Bronckhorst after a bit of a stale run under Steven Gerrard. His energy, finishing and link up play are all key to the way the Dutchman sets his team up.
Rangers currently sit six points clear of Celtic at the top of the table in the hunt for their second consecutive Scottish Premiership title.
Morelos is only behind Tony Watt of Motherwell in the golden boot standings this season and finally broke his duck of scoring against Celtic last season as Rangers ended Celtic’s hopes of ten titles in a row.
Colombia take on Peru on January 28th and Argentina on February 1st – just hours before the Old Firm derby.
