Mark Warburton's QPR in three-club chase to sign Rangers defender Jack Simpson in January

Rangers centre-back Jack Simpson is being eyed by a trio of English clubs ahead of the January transfer window, according to the Telegraph.

Simpson, 24, was signed from Bournemouth by former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard earlier this year but has found opportunities hard to come by in Govan.

He could be set for a return to the English Championship as QPR, Middlesbrough and Swansea City plot moves for the defender.

A move to QPR would see him managed by another former Rangers boss in the form of Mark Warburton, who has inspired the R’s into play-off contenders.

The Championship trio are waiting to find out whether Simpson will be allowed to leave the Gers next month.

Out-of-favour

Eyebrows were raised earlier this year when Simpson pitched up at Ibrox from Bournemouth, having failed to pull up trees on the south-coast of England.

He made just seven appearances under Gerrard during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign as the Gers sauntered to the Premiership title.

Simpson has only played five times this season, despite injuries at the back.

Filip Helander and Leon Balogun are both currently injured while Nikola Katic is out on loan.

That leaves just Connor Goldson and Simpson as the Gers’ only senior centre-backs.

However, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has opted to field left-back Calvin Bassey alongside Goldson, with Simpson failing to feature in a matchday squad since October.

An exit looks like the best route for all parties, but Rangers may decide to wait until the end of January to see if their injured defenders return and if they can spend during the window.
