Alfredo Morelos in off-the-ball Ryan Porteous incident during Rangers 3-1 loss v Hibernian

Alfredo Morelos was involved in an off-the-ball incident with Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous during Rangers’ 3-1 defeat at Hampden Park.

The Light Blues were knocked out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage on Sunday as Martin Boyle’s first-half hat-trick proved too much for the Gers, who scored a consolation through Scott Arfield.

Morelos was unable to get on the scoresheet and the 25-year-old clashed with Ibrox villain Porteous in the first half, according to Richard Gordon on BBC Sportsound.

“Hibs have a man down incidentally, it’s Porteous just getting back to his feet,” Gordon remarked. “The game has been stopped.”

Kenny Miller said: “There’s been a coming together with Alfredo Morelos.”

“I’ve just heard that,” Gordon replied. “This is well off the ball. Play was on the far side in front of the north stand and off to our right, Alfredo Morelos has become embroiled with Ryan Porteous.

“Porteous then went down under the challenge of Morelos.

“Jack Ross [is] not happy, Porteous points to the ground, not happy.”

Off the boil?

It’s nearly a month since Morelos’ last Rangers goal with the Colombian now three games without a goal.

Indeed, he has scored just seven times in 21 appearances this season.

The Light Blues have more pressing issues to contend with, not least in defence where they have become so porous.

But one of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first aims as the new Rangers manager will be to get his star striker back firing to his previous levels.

The Gers hit the target just four times against Hibs today, and just once in the second half.

There has to be some focus on the work of the players behind him and the quality of chances being presented to him, but there also has to be some onus on Morelos to get back on song.

Van Bronckhorst will be hoping that happens soon as he prepares his side to host Sparta Prague on Thursday knowing a win could prove crucial to any chance of reaching the knockout round of the Europa League.

In other Rangers news, Atletico Madrid are plotting a January bid to sign this player from Ibrox.
