Daily Record print cringe-inducing back page as Rangers hire Gio van Bronckhorst

The Daily Record seem to be implying that Rangers fans would not have known a thing about Giovanni van Bronckhorst being hired if it wasn’t for them.

On Thursday, the Dutchman, 46, was officially announced as Steven Gerrard’s successor at Ibrox, bringing to an end a week-long search after the Englishman left for Aston Villa.

Ever since the start, van Bronckhorst’s name was the one on everyone’s lips and Ross Wilson made sure that the dream of the fans became a reality by swooping in for the former Feyenoord manager.

While he won’t be on charge at Hampden on Sunday when we play Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals, the Gers need to be credited for a quick and concise managerial hunt that was concluded quickly and professionally without any drama.

Speculation was rife in the week between Gerrard going and Gio arriving, and the Daily Record posted a lot of stories in that time.

On Friday, they printed a vane and even narcissistic back page that attempted to show off how they were “first” to every story on the was to Gio’s Ibrox return.

Anyone else cringing?

The Daily Record claimed they were first to talk about Gerrard going to Aston Villa. That wasn’t the case as on November 7, The Telegraph reported online that Gerrard was being considered.

The newspaper also claimed that they were first to break the news that van Bronckhorst was on the way to Ibrox. On November 10, the Scottish Sun reported how Gio wanted the job at the Gers.

Funnily enough, the Daily Record managed to also print a story about Derek McInnes being in the frame to replace Gerrard – even though that was rubbished by an official Gers’ media partner in David Edgar of the Heart & Hand Podcast.

Throughout this process, Chris Jack of the Glasgow Evening Times, The 4th Official, Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth and Dutch journalist Mikos Gouka have been some of the most reliable and trusted sources.

They’ve been the first break news while the Daily Record has lagged behind and then claiming they have an exclusive too.

Speaking on CJ Novo’s YouTube account, Edgar said that no one at Rangers talks to the Daily Record and suggested that Keith Jackson was just trying to punt his mate McInnes for the job at Ibrox.

They really are a laughing stock and that pitiful act of vanity on their back page on Friday sums them up totally.

In other Rangers news, Michael Mols has reacted to the Gers hiring van Bronckhorst amid speculation about him possibly returning to Ibrox too.
