Aston Villa might want to sign Connor Goldson from Rangers after Steven Gerrard move

Connor Goldson could follow Steven Gerrard in leaving Rangers to join Aston Villa in January, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported in their print edition [November 12, page 7] that Goldson, 28, is hopeful of a chance in the Premier League and his dream move could become a reality in January now Gerrard is at Villa.

It is understood that even though the centre-back has seen his form tip this season, he’s valued at £2million with it unlikely that he’ll sign a new contract, which expires at the end of this season.

Let him go?

Rangers do not have an abundance of great options in the centre-back position, especially on a long-term basis.

Goldson seems likely to leave in the summer if he doesn’t go to Villa Park – or elsewhere – in the January transfer window.

Leon Balogun’s deal is also up in the summer and he’ll turn 34 at the end of the season. Jack Simpson is nowhere near good enough and that leaves just Filip Helander and Nikola Katic, who’s currently out on loan, as our only great options.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, or whoever else replaces Gerrard, will have to sort that area of the squad out once they arrive and due to the underwhelming defensive displays this season, January could be the best time to do.

Goldson may only get us £2million in January but that’s better than nothing and his displays this term suggest he may not be worth keeping for an extra few months just to lose on a free transfer.

In other Rangers news, a BBC pundit has shared the “inside information” he’s learned after receiving a text from an Ibrox-linked manager.
