Chris Sutton reacts instantly as Rangers confirm Steven Gerrard move to Aston Villa

Chris Sutton has sent his best wishes to Steven Gerrard after it was confirmed that he’s left Rangers to join Aston Villa.

In a statement on the Villa website, it has been announced that Gerrard has replaced Dean Smith at the Premier League club and he’s “proud” to do so.

Former Aston Villa and Celtic striker reacted instantly to the news on social media and managed to aim a dig at Gerrard, saying that St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson won more trophies than him in Scotland.

“Good luck to Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. He was great for Scottish football and raised its profile. He will be a big loss to Rangers,” said Sutton via his personal Twitter account.

“Stopping Celtic winning 10 was a big deal but Callum Davidson did win more trophies than him over the time… who will Rangers turn to??”

Davidson for Ibrox?

It would be a bit of a brave shout as Davidson is relatively new to the managerial game.

However, the former Scotland and Leicester defender won a cup double with Saints last season while they’re also in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals this term.

Davidson is bound to be someone who’s considered as he’s without doubt the best manager in the Scottish Premiership now that Gerrard has gone to Villa.

Rangers should be able to draw him in and they should be able to pay for him quite easily with the money handed to them by Villa for Gerrard.

Who else is there out there right now?

A lot of fans seem to want ex-Gers star Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who’s without a club and won the Eredivisie title at Feyenoord a few years back.

He’d be a good shout but we really want to avoid the likes of Derek McInnes, Alex Neil and co. They always seem to be linked and we really don’t want them.

In other Rangers news, an official partner of the Gers has spoken out about the Russell Martin speculation.
