BBC pundit: Rangers boss Steven Gerrard to reject Newcastle if 'no-brainer' approach made

Steven Gerrard should reject Newcastle United and stay at Rangers if the Premier League club makes an approach for him, according to Peter Crouch.

The Times has reported that Gerrard has made a three-man shortlist for the Magpies as they aim to replace Steve Bruce in the St James’ Park dugout.

It is understood that Gerrard’s impressive job at Ibrox as seen him win the support of the Newcastle boardroom.

However, Gerrard’s former teammate Crouch has insisted that while the Liverpool legend would be a good hire for Newcastle, he shouldn’t go there.

“That Newcastle are casting glances in his direction is no surprise at all. Approaching Stevie is a complete no-brainer,” Crouch wrote on the Daily Mail website.

“There is a major rebuild to be done by whoever takes over from Steve Bruce and there are similarities to the job he walked into at Rangers — albeit with slightly different budgets!

“If I’m a Newcastle fan, I’d love somebody like Stevie to come in.”

Crouch believes that Gerrard is bound to be Liverpool’s next manager once Jurgen Klopp finally leaves Anfield.

The ex-Liverpool striker also warns Gerrard that the job at Newcastle might not be worth taking due to the uncertainty surrounding the new owners.

He added: “If I were in his shoes, I would probably give it a swerve. There would be an element of feeling wary about the unknowns, for sure. Other factors are at play as well. The Rangers support would understand his departure for Anfield, whereas it might be a somewhat different conversation with Newcastle.

“If there is a five-year plan, it is a mouth-watering prospect — challenging for titles with the money now at their disposal. It is absolutely the correct move for somebody ambitious who backs themselves.

“Stevie is both those things. If Newcastle get it right, it is a club ready to lift off.

“Stevie would be a terrific appointment. But how far away is real success at Newcastle — and I mean silverware — and how does that impact on the Liverpool job? These are huge questions he must ask himself if the interest in him becomes serious over the coming days.”

Going nowhere

Why would Gerrard take the Newcastle job?

As it stands, they are a club with a Championship squad who are sat in the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Even with their new, wealthy owners, they’re going to be in a relegation battle this season.

Newcastle’s next manager isn’t going to be an exciting one. But the one after that will be once they’re stabilised in the Premier League.

Gerrard has Rangers top of the Scottish Premiership and in the group stages of the Europa League.

He could stay here, try to win a domestic treble and build even more of a gap to Celtic or he could go to Newcastle and potentially be managing in England’s second-tier next season – or even worse, sacked.
